Factory CEO accuses adviser Chris Degnan of 'unethical conduct involving Cognition'; 52 minutes later Cognition names him CRO and denies everything
On Sept 30, 2026 Factory CEO Matan Grinberg posted that Factory was "terminating Chris Degnan for unethical conduct involving Cognition", alleging that the ex-Snowflake CRO, a Factory adviser and board observer, had talked with Cognition while sitting in Factory board meetings. Degnan said he had already resigned, and Cognition announced him as its chief revenue officer. Cognition CEO Scott Wu called the allegations untrue. No lawsuit or evidence of a leak has been made public.
Key facts
- Grinberg's post at 9:33 a.m. PT; Degnan announced the Cognition CRO job at 10:25 a.m. (The State of AI)
- Grinberg also alleged that Cognition engineers posed as job candidates to learn about Factory's product, and said Factory was 'uncertain about how much information, if any, may have been shared'
- Degnan: 'You did not terminate me. I resigned from my advisor position on Monday and told you I was going to Cognition'; he says the last board meeting he attended was weeks before he spoke to Cognition
- Scott Wu: 'your allegations here about Cognition are not true. We have no interest in Factory's info and Chris has never brought it up'
- Degnan was Snowflake's first sales hire and later its CRO; he had advised Factory since November 2025. Reported valuations: Cognition ~$48B, Factory ~$5B (Sept 2026)
- Vinod Khosla quote-posted Grinberg, siding with Cognition: 'You are a struggling second tier competitor that is more unethical and lying… Straight out lying about if Chris being fired' (~3.9M views)
- Reach (fxtwitter, Oct 5): Grinberg ~5.2M views, Scott Wu ~1.6M, Degnan ~0.67M
What happened
Two of the best-funded coding-agent startups fought in public on X over an enterprise-sales executive. Factory accused Cognition of using Degnan and fake job interviews to gather intelligence; Degnan and Cognition denied it, and Vinod Khosla attacked Factory in a multi-million-view quote-post.
Why it matters
It is a sign of how fierce competition among coding-agent companies became in 2026, with sales talent as valuable as research talent. The allegations are unproven.
