Musk launches Terafab, a $20–25B Tesla–SpaceX–xAI AI chip fab project in Austin aiming at 1 terawatt of compute a year

★★★hardware-computeTeslaSpaceXxAIconfidence: high

On March 21, 2026, at the disused Seaholm Power Plant in Austin, Elon Musk launched Terafab, a joint chipmaking project of Tesla, SpaceX and xAI to build a vertically integrated fab for AI and memory chips, estimated at $20–25B. It targets "one terawatt" of AI compute a year and up to 1 million wafer starts per month, with output only for Musk's companies, mostly for planned orbital AI data centers.

Key facts

What happened

Musk presented Terafab as a single complex for chip design, lithography, fabrication, memory, advanced packaging and testing, built because existing foundries could not grow fast enough for Tesla's robots and cars and SpaceX's planned space data centers.

Why it matters

It is the most ambitious attempt by an AI company to make its own chips rather than rely on TSMC, and it frames compute in power terms (terawatts). Its later partners (Intel, then talks with TSMC) and the Grimes County site trace how the plan evolved.
